What to Do When Sex Doesn’t Feel Right: Seeking Help for Female Sexual Dysfunction

In 2021, I finished creating a guide for women seeking help for sexual dysfunction. It was a big undertaking, and the resulting document provides necessary sex education and help-seeking information, but it is also very, very long. In the coming weeks, I will share easier-to-digest summaries of each section of that guide, starting with why you should read the guide (or the summaries).

Why should I read this guide?

Women’s sexual function and dysfunction have a significant impact on their overall well-being and relationships. Unfortunately, many women face sexual function problems but lack the necessary support and information. This guide aims to address this gap by providing accurate information, resources, and guidance for women experiencing female sexual dysfunction (FSD) or related conditions. By empowering women with knowledge, we hope to improve their sexual health and quality of life.

Why does this matter?

Sexuality plays a vital role in most women’s lives, impacting mental health, self-esteem, relationships, and overall well-being. FSD can lead to decreased sexual desire, arousal difficulties, and sexual dissatisfaction, affecting both women and their partners. Without proper knowledge and access to resources, women may suffer from these negative impacts without receiving the necessary help.

How prevalent is female sexual dysfunction?

FSD is more common than you might think. Studies show that 55% of non-European Western women and 28% of Canadian women experience sexual function problems. These include low sexual desire, lubrication difficulties, inability to reach orgasm, pain during sex, and unpleasurable experiences. Other sexual dysfunctions, like persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) or genital numbness, also affect a significant number of women. Identifying these issues early is crucial for seeking timely assistance.

What barriers do women face?

Women often face barriers when seeking help for their sexual function problems. Negative experiences and a lack of awareness about available resources hinder their ability to navigate the healthcare system effectively. This guide aims to equip women with the knowledge to overcome these barriers and prepare them to seek help confidently.

What’s the purpose of this guide?

This web-based guide focuses on supporting women with FSD, although some information may be applicable to related conditions. Its primary goal is to provide accurate information on sexual function and dysfunction, as well as direct women to appropriate resources. By understanding the why, when, where, and how of seeking help, women can make informed decisions and prevent negative help-seeking experiences.

Women deserve proper support and information when it comes to their sexual health. By addressing the prevalence of FSD, the barriers to seeking help, and the importance of accurate knowledge, this guide aims to empower women in their sexual journeys. By understanding their own bodies and accessing appropriate resources, women can enhance their sexual well-being, overall health, and relationships.
